afro was our first international release, and our first attempt to bring afro-peruvian music up to date in the same way as nicomedes santa cruz and others did decades ago when the fragile existence of this music was fading. we were very satisfied with the result, which is raw and acoustic but at the same time electronic. dark but soulful. deep and haunting at times. we are joined on this album by some of the finest afro-peruvian musicians on cajon, guitar and vocals giving every song a live feel and the album includes additional production on all tracks by nitin sawhney s and da lata s studio wizard toni economides.

since so many european labels have been reissuing lost and obscure 1980s japanese ambient albums of late, it was probably inevitable that at least one label would put together a compilation paying tribute to the sound. it turns out that jazzy couscous has won the race with kumo no moko, a superb double album that does a terrific job in putting japan s 80s ambient scene in context. as you d expect, the majority of the tracks feature either dreamy electronic sounds or a mixture of acoustic and electronic instrumentation, with nods to jazz coming thick and fast. there are naturally a couple of fairly well-known names on show, but for the most part the compilers have done a terrific job in highlight lesser-known tracks from unsung heroes.

yes, one hundred! wow! morris audio s 100th release is a milestone for one of the most productive labels from switzerland. morris audio started 18 years ago, the sublabel morris audio citysport 15 years ago. with a total of more than 150 releases, the labels have been making their marks by presenting different types of electronic music, from techno to minimal to deep house with everything in between. combining established producers and youngsters, morris audio has an impressive artist roaster. remember the likes of dub taylor, jackmate, hakan lidbo, burnski, till von sein, kris wadsworth, iron curtis, oli furness, dash dude, tom ellis&leif or brame just to name a few? it has been -club and home entertainment- for years and we celebrate this 100th release with two parts of well-crafted tech/house tunes. part 1 is the more techy one and features morris fella iron curtis, new signing anna wall & corbi, and swiss boys replika and elvis cassetta. collectors item!

over the last 20 years, tara rodgers has had a wide-ranging and prolific career as a multi-instrumentalist composer and music scholar. shes studied with sonic experimentalists maggi payne, fred frith, and pauline oliveros, shes self-released 6 lps and 6 eps of electronic music, and shes got tracks on move ds source records and the le tigre remix 12inch. the new fundamentals ep is her first release under the analog tara moniker in 15 years, delivering funky techno from analog sources.

serendipity - defined as making discoveries or happy accidents - is the debut ep by liam van ryn. its a fitting description for the richly textured and cinematic four track collection that was the result of intensive and prolonged sessions goofing around on analogue gear. strictly limited 12 pressing this is a hell of a debut - one to watch for the future! the title track is the most immediately wonderful cut here, with choked arpeggios, clouds of caustic static and found scrapes as percussion. dj mag (8/10 ep review) early support from: nathan fake - interesting lush sounds lanark artefax - sounds great and is really coherent for a debut ep tessela - this is wicked man, really like that pitch1! based in hull, van ryn makes richly textured and layered, cinematic music that is both experimental and (mostly) electronic. i was interested in the way i could make the music sound slightly unnatural, or like it couldnt be played by a real musician, even though that was often the starting point, he explains. box.

for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene’s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin’s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80’s wasn’t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn’t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don’t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin’s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient’s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

killer smile is an independent multi-genre record label, created by uk-based producer john morrow (foul play, 4 horsemen of the apocalypse, johnny halo, skeleton army) and lifelong friend and electronic music veteran darran juzyk. the first release on label killer smile comes from its founder and ex foul play member john morrow aka skeleton army. the -catchy schisms ep- features four eclectic tracks firmly rooted in leftfield territory. vague pads, swarming electronics, deep bass tones and off kilter drum tracks mark a distinct change in style from previous house based skeleton army releases. this is john back in experimental mode, not afraid to take a few risks and avoiding traditional dance floor constraints.

highly synergistic split from eleh/caterina barbieri featuring two sides of similar audio dimensions. these two electronic sound poems slowly unfurl rich timbre and harmonics with an austere stillness that is, somehow, ever-changing. it hardly matters whose side is whose.

el deux is the swiss electro-pop trio of gutze gautschi (guitar, vocals), steno onetz (bass), martin kraft (vocals, drum machine). formed circa 1981 in aarau by gutze and steno who played together in punk/new wave band fresh color aka frische farbe featuring a pre-yello dieter meier. gutze?s minimal electronic compositions did not fit the concept of fresh color, so they formed a new project with their live mixer, martin kraft, on vocals.

label head steven rutter joins forces with john shima (fs005) on this bright ep with its direction turned towards the light. the heavenly ‘skywards’ leads the way upwards with tenderly treated spacious drum programming and light-as-air atmospherics while darker and deeper cavernous tones create the yin-yang balance of lightness and dark. ‘broken spell’ continues the uplifted vibe of a spell that when broken, blooms open with an intoxicating permeating sweetness like an exotic fragrance that lingers in one’s memory. ‘a new day’ leans slightly more towards a heavier driven track featuring a funky bassline with bright electronic notations as counterpoint while drifting, dreamy pads keep the overall mood airy and light. the off-kilter knob is turned way right on the bouncy final track ’disjointed route’, injecting dashes of wry quirk alongside a lightly moving groove.

in search of the sublime, contemporary electronic musician steve hauschildt has designed grids and panoramas of sound across multiple releases through the rise and dissolution of his former band, emeralds, an american touchstone of 2000s home-recorded psychedelic noise music. consistent with his solo work is hauschildt’s ability to coil his craft in precise, varied, and distinctly physical forms. gently spinning arpeggios converse with post-industrial decay. sonic fibers sway like pendulums from static melancholy to motorik bliss. dissolvi, the artist’s first full-length with ghostly international, engages sublimation from an ontological perspective: by dissociating the self. hauschildt steps out from the singular path, for the first time in a traditional studio, to compose and arrange contributions from friends. as a result, his most collaborative work to date extends a vast, vibrating framework in which to consider the state of being. the vinyl release includes a download code.

“monstrance” is mika vainio & joachim nordwall’s first album together and was originally released june 2013 via touch (to:88). it consist of drone works and pulsating electronic minimalism but also guitar, acoustic elements, organs and metal percussion. it was recorded in einstürzende neubauten’s berlin studio during an intense session in early summer of 2010. “monstrance” is a place where vainio’s and nordwall’s backgrounds as musicians and composers meet, and something new and extremely powerful is born. something deep, raw and direct…

after being one of the many standouts on the we are opilec…! vol. iii compilation back in 2016, i-robots glamouflage is now getting a full vinyl release with artwork by tomozo kevorkian, who was designer for nyc s body & soul, and remixes by a standout team of producers from japan to switzerland to south africa and the usa. opening up the ep is a fantastic new take ii version from label boss i-robots, who added exclusive chinese vocal samples recorded on the streets of huang jiang city many years ago. the track is inspired by ennio morricone and supermax and is a loose and infectious groove with brilliant drums and percussion and an elastic bassline that really gets you moving. it s a subtle update to the original—also included here as a bonus cut—which itself is a steamy and tropical sounding groove. swiss electronic pioneer schaltkreis wassermann then features on a version of the original that reaches for the cosmos with its rugged bass riffs, tumbling toms and busy, ever evolving groove. it has a big breakdown with exotic synths wandering through the night and oodles of effects and big guitar licks. the first of the remixes comes from kuniyuki takahashi who has been a big supporter of i-robots since 2000. he is a sound designer from japan who had a compilation of his works put out by music from memory back in february. his version is laden with cosmic synths and chants, grunting and organic drums and is sure to be massive this summer thanks to its open air vibes. detroit s underrated but vital gary martin is the boss of the teknotika label and his version featuring colten decker playing an unusual sax line shows another side to the motor city. it s a curious and mysterious tune that makes for an unsettling atmosphere that keeps you locked throughout as it snakes along.

one of the most exciting young producers to emerge from japan in recent years is yunosuke senoo, aka lycoriscoris. with a knack for fusing organic melodies with futuristic electronic production, his distinctive output has been supported by the likes of dj koze and michael mayer. senoo now readies the launch of his latest album ‘flight’ on anjunadeep.

verdant recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. next up on the label is the first public appearance from interjection, a london-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. her blissful solitude is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while common places drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. radiating soul has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and her nocturnal note finishes the ep off with a shimmering trip out to complement the a1.

currently the rediscovery of long forgotten japanese electronic, jazz and new age music is at a peak like never before. but although many re-issues already flood the record stores around the world: the large, diverse musical culture of japan still got some gems in store that are really missing.

berlin duo local suicide and mexican producer mijo join forces to deliver two stunning original works for the latest installment of roam recordings. edo kai tora is a uptempo main time jam with a nice vocal weaved through driving electronic stylings. ganz falsch has an electro boogie feel with cosmic synths and a fun vocal rhythmically tying it all together.

supporting the ep are two excellent remixes from renowned artists sascha funke and simple symmetry. sascha funke s elegantly dark version creeps in with a hypnotic and captivating energy while simple symmetry moves into party mode with pop sensible guitars and heavy wonkiness perfect for picking up the vibe at any party.
